How to setup a new store from our theme quickstart demo package

Step1: Check the requirements

To see the technical requirements (PHP, MysQL, etc.) please read the following articles:

  1. Magento knowledge base -
  2. Check if your host or server can run Magento -

We assume that your site url is http://domain.tld/ and your web root directory is /home/domain.tld/public_html/.

Step2: Create a new database

You can use phpMyAdmin or any database admin tool or create new database from server/host control panel.

If you use phpMyAdmin, please make sure you have the right permission to create a database.

Step3: Upload, extract the package and reset file and folder permissions

  • Use any FTP client program to connect to your server. Browse to the web root directory or your vhost web root (/home/domain.tld/public_html/ )  then upload the package.
  • Unzip the package. Ways to do:
    • Use an unzip.php script
    • Use FileManager of host/server control panel or any FileManager script which you are family with.
    • Use command line 'unzip' if you have ssh login.
  • Reset files and folders permission. Ways to do:
    • Refer this article . Download magento-cleanup.php and upload it to the root directory which you have just extracted the package. As we assumed, you will upload this file to /home/domain.tld/public_html/ then open web browser to browse to address http://domain.tld/magento-cleanup.php. If the package already included this file, just browse to that address.
    • Login via ssh and use 'chmod' unix command to change all folder permissions to 755, change all file permissions to 644, and change 'pear' folder permissions to 550.

Step4: Run the installer

Common problems when install Magento

If you got any problem when install, please refer articles on this link

Another common problem is the installer match limit of execution time setting. This lead to the blank page or error 500 appears. Solutions:

  • If your server run apache with mod_php => it is the limit of "max_execution_time" value. You can change the value of max_execution_time to a higher value (>= 360 in our testing) or to 0 (unlimited) in php.ini. And we also implemented this change in the installer by call set_time_limit(0) so you have not to do that.
  • If your server run Apache with CGI / Fast CGI, you must change the value of IPCCommTimeout (old apache) or FcgidIOTimeout (from apache 2.4) to a higher value, example 360.
  • If your server run other webserver, please refer its' document to know about appropriate setting.
